2004 Corvette Overview
The arrival of the 2004 Chevy Corvette brought with it the official announcement that, as far every bit factory production of the C5 was concerned, this would be the final year for the 5th generation model. Despite the growing rumors that an all-new Corvette was on the mode, information technology had been decided that Chevrolet would continue to produce the Corvette and then as not to get out a production gap (equally they had in 1983) while ramping upwards production of a next generation C6 Corvette.
Just the same, it was also decided that no notable changes should exist made to the 2004 C5, save for the introduction of a couple new paint colors – namely Magnetic Reddish Ii, which every bit a re-formulated variant of the Magnetic Red originally used on the 1999 thru 2002 models and Arctic White, which had been featured previously on the 1997 to 2000 models.

However, General Motors, looking to commemorate the spectacular accomplishments that had been achieved by the C5 Corvette both on and off the race track during its viii year production run, also decided to introduce a special Commemorative Edition Corvette for its final model year.
The Commemorative Edition 2004 Corvette was specifically designed to pay homage to Corvette'south successful render to racing. All the Commemorative Edition 2004 Corvettes were finished in a striking LeMans Blueish paint with red-edged silver stripes that adorned the hood, roof and rear deck lid. Special "LeMans 24-hours" emblems featuring Corvette's iconic crossed-flags trademark appeared on the nose and the tail of the automobile, and a matching keepsake was embroidered into the headrests of the custom shale color interior leather seats.
Completing the commemorative package on all of the especially equipped coupes and convertibles was the introduction of polished blend wheels. This option, which could be ordered equally function of the regular 1SB Preferred Equipment grouping, was as well made available – at a moderate additional cost of $3,700 for either the coupe or convertible upgrade.
The Z06 Commemorative Edition, on the other-hand, was a niggling more costly. Withal, it likewise included a few additional upgrades over the base coupe and convertible. Priced at an additional $4,335, the Commemorative Edition option for the Z06 Coupe included a unique carbon-fiber hood that reduced the nose weight of the car by 10.vi pounds. The carbon-fibers were aligned in a single direction and then that the alternating material would maintain a smooth sheen when painted. The simply exception to this was a pocket-sized cross-hatch design that was subtly displayed in the hood graphic between the silver and red sections.
DID YOU KNOW: The 2004 Cadillac XLR, a luxury ii-seater with a powered, fully retractable hardtop, were congenital on a split up product line at the Corvette's Bowling Green Manufacturing Facility in Kentucky.
Developed as a collaborative endeavor betwixt Chevrolet, MacLean Vehicle Systems, and Toray Composites, the hood's carbon cobweb engineering science was based on aerospace technologies and was the first painted carbon fiber console ever featured on an American manufactured vehicle.
Beyond the car's hood, articulate coat wheels with hubs reading "Commemorative 24:00 Heures du Mans" were also added to the Z06 package upgrade. Additionally, a blackness interior was once again featured as function of the Z06 Commemorative Edition parcel, but equally it had been on the 50th anniversary commemorative edition.
But there was more than than merely cosmetic improvements to the Z06 that caused the meaning crash-land in the Special Edition Bundle price.
The well-nigh pregnant of these improvements was the boosted testing that the 2004 Z06 received at the Nürburgring (a globe renowned race runway and proving basis for many of the acme automotive manufacturers), which resulted in revised damping for the Sachs gas-pressure shock absorbers, stiffer bushings for the upper command arms, and softer bushings for the rear anti-ringlet bar.
All of these modifications were made in an effort to reduce the time it took for the Z06 to "settle" during transient maneuvers – and the results were quite successful.
Ironically, the 2004 Commemorative Edition Z06 would not exist made available equally a European export. Instead, Chevrolet offered European consumers the option of ordering a special edition LeMans Bluish Commemorative Coupe. Listed every bit an pick (RPO Z18), the Commemorative Coupe would feature the Z06 stripe package, Z06 suspension, blackness interior and a carbon-fiber hood. Information technology came equipped with non-EMT tires on the stock coupe. The car also came equipped with a 405 horsepower, LS1 V8 engine mated and to a half-dozen-speed manual transmission.
RACING: As the C5.R neared retirement, its final season was nix brusque of spectacular -and a plumbing fixtures sendoff for a car that had proven, without question, that Corvette was a serious contender on the racetrack. In 2004, Squad Corvette went undefeated for the unabridged American LeMans Season. Every race run during this flavour was won either by the No. three or the No. 4 Corvette Racing Teams.
To capture the magnitude of the divergence in the cars drivability with these upgrades in place, the Z06 was distributed to a number of professional person automotive critics. Each was encouraged to drive the car and review its handling appropriately. Several critics drove the car, and nearly all had a like reaction to the Z06's improved responsiveness.
As Frank Markus, of Car and Driver'south Magazine stated in their September 2003 review: '[The Z06'southward] steering response is [now] so much quicker it's hard to believe the ratio is the aforementioned [as in other 'Vettes]. Its weight is within 141 pounds of [other models], yet it feels like hundreds less. Its structure also feels twice every bit rigid. Aye, it filters out less route noise and harshness but at least each bump is felt but once…The [Commemorative] Z06 is clearly the [Corvette] that best rewards expert driving."
Other reviewers were equally complimentary to both the Corvette and the team behind its latest technology. Motor Trend hailed the Commemorative Z06 as the fastest exhibit 'Vette that they had e'er tested, with a 0-60 time of 4.ii seconds and a standing quarter mile of just 12.iv seconds at 117 miles per hr. Moreover, it was hailed as the best combination of functioning, condolement, and value in the automotive world.
In the end, there were really no negative comments directed past any of the major automotive reviewers towards the 2004 Commemorative Edition Corvette – save for 1. General Motors, recognizing that the 2004 Corvette would already be highly sought later on as a collector's car, deliberately limited production of the Commemorative Edition car to merely 2,000 Z06 Coupes, and simply nether v,000 standard coupes and convertibles. Withal, given the success of the C5's production run during its eight year history, most felt that the Commemorative Edition was a plumbing equipment sendoff to one of the nearly successful Corvette generations to appointment.
And successful it had been. The C5 was one of the most respected and most celebrated of all Corvettes to date, and it had the awards to prove it. Besides winning an unprecedented number of trophies on the podium at such venues equally Leguna Seca, Road Atlanta, and fifty-fifty the coveted 24 Hours of LeMans, the production model Corvette had also been named "Automobile of the Year" (Automobile Magazine, 2001), "N American Motorcar of the Yr", "Car of the Year" (Motor Trend, 1998), "A All-time Buy Amidst Sports Cars (Consumer Guide Best Buy), and perhaps most impressive of all, it had ranked in Machine and Driver'due south annual ten Best List in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004.
Of form, the accolades just told i part of the story. Another mensurate of the C5's overall success during its production run was the large number of units that were produced year after ear. If one measures success in terms to full units manufactured and sold, then Corvettes numbers still reigned supreme with near a quarter million C5 Corvettes being sold in just an viii year window – which worked out to approximately 34,000 Corvettes per twelvemonth.
Given its sales numbers and the unprecedented number of awards and accolades received, at that place could be no doubt that the C5 Corvette had raised the bar to an entirely new level – not simply for Corvette or American made sports cars, only for sports cars from all over the world. The general question that critics and enthusiasts akin were at present request was what Full general Motors had planned to elevation the success of the C5 Corvette.
But that would come – every bit with all things – in good time.

Summary: On Certain Passenger Vehicles Equipped With Electronic Column Lock Systems (Ecl), When The Ignition Switch Is Turned To "lock," The Ecl Arrangement Prevents Turning Of The Steering Organization. When The Vehicle Is Started, The Ecl Unlocks The Steering Arrangement. The Vehicle Is Designed So That If The Column Fails To Unlock When The Vehicle Is Started And The Customer Tries To Bulldoze, The Fuel Supply Will Be Shut Off And then That The Vehicle Cannot Move When The Vehicle Cannot Be Steered. If Voltage At The Powertrain Control Module Is Low Or Interrupted, However, The Fuel Shut Off May Non Occur And The Vehicle Can Be Accelerated While The Steering System Is Locked. Also When The Control System Shows That The Ecl Is Unlocked And The Vehicle Is Being Driven, The Lock Pivot Location Can Vary. Depending On The Location Of The Lock Plate Relative To The Switch Transition Point, At that place Could So Be Contact Between The Lock Plate And Pin Causing The Steering To Lock While Driving .
Event: If This Occurs, A Crash Could Occur Without Warning.
Remedy: On Vehicles Equipped With An Automated Transmission, The Dealer Will Disable The Steering Column Lock By Removing The Column Lock Plate. When The Ignition Key Is Removed, The Transmission Shifter Will Lock But The Steering Column Will Not Lock. 2004 Corvette Common Issues
The following list of mutual issues is intended for private reference only, and may not reflect the specific issues of every 2004 Corvette. While the intent of this folio is to identify the common issues pertaining to the 2004 Corvette, it is not an all-inclusive list and should be used for reference but.
Mechanical Bug
Leaking Battery
Many C5'southward came with AC Delco Liberty batteries that had a tendency to feel exterior nifty almost the battery posts. The leaking bombardment acid drips down the side of the bombardment, downwardly the funnel-like battery support, straight down onto the PCM and the wiring loom. Information technology can also get onto the A/C lines. In some instances, auto crippling damage can occur. Worst case scenario tin result in the need to supersede the battery, the PCM, and the wiring harness. Additionally, acid corrosion volition demand to exist removed from the frame and the frame repainted to avoid further damage as a result of prolonged exposure to natural elements. In some instances, repairs volition need to be made to the air condition lines. It may also require replacing the computer.
Engine
The needle bearings in the OEM rockers have been known to neglect. The most common indicators that the engine is experiencing this blazon of a trouble is increased valve train noise and the appearance of needle bearings on a magnetic oil pan bleed plug.
The PCV system has a trend to draw oil back into the intake at loftier RPM's. It does not seem to cause whatsoever mechanical problems, other than a slight mess within the intake manifold. A newer style PCV system can be installed, but this requires removing all the components in the top of the engine valley. This problem volition cause carbon buildup in the cylinders.
Manual Transmission
On manual transmission cars equipped with either an MN6 or M12 transmission, the transmission sounds as if it is chattering/rattling whenever the machine begins to accelerate from a complete terminate. Despite the foreign nature of the sound, It is completely normal. The sound is the bi-product of the clutch throwout bearing, which creates a ratting sound whenever it is engaged/disengaged. In some instances, the transmission will brand a similar, discernable rattling audio when the Corvette ignition is turned on/off. The source of the sound is the aforementioned. By depressing the clutch when turning the car on or off, the audio can be eliminated.
The C5 Corvette's manual manual shifter can be difficult to get into gear. During normal vehicle operation, it is worth noting that if the shifter is not fully engaged when operating 1st gear or Reverse, it will crusade the manual to literally "popular" out of gear when the clutch is let out. This is not considered the error of the car by Genera Motors, but the fault of the driver.
Fuel Pump
In all C5 Corvettes, there are two fuel tanks and two fuel pumps. The beginning fuel pump continually pumps gasoline from the passenger side tank into the commuter side tank. This pump is not known to create any blazon of audible audio. The primary fuel pump, which resides directly behind the drivers seat, creates a considerable amount of racket, particularly on early model C5 Corvettes. These sounds are normal, and are not an indicator of a failing fuel pump. Note: Chevrolet does have a bulletin out instructing Corvette owners how to better insulate against the humming sound of the fuel pump. Additionally, a newer, quieter fuel pump can also be installed.
Braking Organization
The front brakes of many C5 Corvettes have been known to drum during braking weather. This is the consequence of warped rotors. The brake rotors adult for the C5 Corvette are known to warp from excessive braking conditions. This does not betoken that the restriction rotors crave replacement. In many instances, the rotors tin can simply be turned. Still, when inspecting the restriction rotors, it is important to detect if the rotors are croaky, as a croaky rotor volition require replacement. Cracked rotors are the result of excessive hard braking and could be an indicator of how the car has been driven/maintained.
Outside Issues
Headlight Bezel Plugs
Onetime-style headlight bezel plugs, which conceal the bezel mounting hardware, have a tendency to fall off of older C5 Corvettes. To resolve this issue, General Motors released a new mode plug that features a twist-lock to prevent the plugs from falling out, merely these plugs also require a new headlight bezel. Just the newer way bezels and plugs are bachelor through General Motors and both are uniform with all years of the C5 Corvette.
Hood Rattles
During periods of cold weather, the rubber hood stops have a tendency to rub and churr against the hood. Proper aligning and lubrication of the hood stops is known to reduce/eliminate this issue.
Interior Issues
Steering Cavalcade
All C5 Corvettes, peculiarly those equipped with a manual manual, are known to have as have an effect with the steering column locking after ignition is disengaged and remaining locked later vehicle operator starts the vehicle again. In rare instances, information technology has also been reported that the steering column has locked during vehicle operation. Chevrolet dealerships are able to disable the locking machinery by replacing the current locking plate with a modified locking plate. At present, this is the only known method to resolve this issue.
Seats
The C5 Corvette seats have several known issues that can occur if improper utilize and or improper maintenance occurs. Sliding hard across the bolster (the raised/contoured sections of the sitting area on either side of the central seat pad) tin break it, causing it to flap from side to side. This area is also the most common expanse of the seats to experience leather wearable/tearing every bit a result of having the nearly abrasive contact with the occupant equally they enter/leave the vehicle.
The wire springs in the seat lesser, and the bars in the bolsters are sometimes known to wear thru the foam and leather. This situation can exist fixed by placing a layer of burlap between the springs and the foam padding.
Another common seat result often identified with many early C5 Corvettes is that both the driver and rider seats tend to rock back and forth by almost a 1/4″ during hard acceleration and braking. This consequence can be repaired, only is non currently identified as an actual issue with General Motors.
Removable Roof
Many C5 Corvette Coupes with the removable roof tend to create a off-white amount of wind noise and creaking during normal vehicle operation. While there is no known solution to completely eliminate the air current noise, the creaking can be reduced/eliminated by adding a lubricant to the weatherstriping seal around the roof. A dielectric or petroleum based grease is recommended and will doubly protect the weatherstrip by keeping it from drying out.
Fuel Gauge
In sure instances, some types of gasoline (peculiarly those with a high sulfur content) will crusade the fuel gauge to falsely read empty. In some instances, running a fuel system cleaner through the gas tank has been known to resolve this event.
